Getting nicotine strength wrong is the most common reason people give up on vaping in the first fortnight. Too high and you get headaches, nausea and a raw throat. Too low and you puff constantly without ever feeling settled, then conclude vaping does not work. Neither is a failure of the device.
The two types of nicotine
Before the number, the type matters — and they are not interchangeable.
Salt nicotine
Chemically modified to be far smoother at high strength and absorb faster. This is what is in almost every disposable and every pod system. It comes in 20mg, 25mg, 35mg and 50mg. It belongs in low-power devices with higher-resistance coils.
Freebase nicotine
The traditional form. Harsher in the throat at the same strength, so it is sold weak — usually 3mg or 6mg — and used in higher-power direct-to-lung devices that produce a lot of vapour.

When in doubt, go lower. Moving up a strength is easy and pleasant. Working through nicotine sickness because you started at 50mg is neither.
How to tell you are on the wrong strength
Too high
- Headache, dizziness or light-headedness after a few puffs
- Nausea
- A racing heart or jittery feeling
- A harsh, scratchy throat that does not settle
Stop, drink some water, and drop a strength.
Too low
- Vaping almost constantly without feeling satisfied
- Still craving cigarettes
- Getting through liquid or devices unusually fast
What to buy at each strength

Many people reduce strength gradually — 50mg to 35mg to 20mg over several months. Drop one step at a time and stay there until it feels normal before going again.
